Leaving a lasting legacy | Providence Row

By Renata, Director of Development

This coming week is ‘Remember a Charity week’ which raises awareness of how legacy gifts (gifts people leave in their Wills) contribute to supporting charities in the UK. Remember a Charity is a consortium of around 200 charities (including Providence Row) who have joined together to encourage more people to remember a charity in their Will, once they’ve taken care of their loved ones of course.

Providence Row has been running since 1860 and I can’t even begin to estimate how many people this charity has supported over the years, let alone guess how many generous people have supported and contributed to the charity. Many of these contributions during this time have been through legacy gifts. It is safe to say that gifts in Wills from long-term supporters have contributed hugely to the longevity of this charity. This Remember a Charity Week Providence Row is launching their new gifts in Wills programme and raising awareness among supporters about supporting us through legacy giving.

This year we are launching our Gifts in Wills programme – which includes new materials and webpages. To help support this programme long-time supporter Tony explained to us why he is leaving Providence Row a gift in his Will.

“For me it was a life-changing experience. I hadn’t seen poverty like that before and I was amazed that there were people who so willingly gave their time to help others so selflessly. I vowed to myself that I would do something to help one day and now I’m in a position to do so.”

We understand that leaving a legacy may not be for everyone. We want to make sure anyone considering supporting us in this incredible way is happy and comfortable about this decision. That’s why we make the following promises:

  • We understand than family and friends come first, always!
  • We handle all your gifts efficiently so it can do the greatest good.
  • If people want their gift to fund a specific area of work we will do our best to respect this wish.
  • We would love to thank you for your gift, but understand that you may not wish to tell us about your gift.
  • We recognise that you may want to change your Will and this is your right to do so.

Every gift in Will large or small has the power to make a lasting difference for the people we work with. We are so grateful and moved by these gifts.
