An American in London: my time with Providence Row | Providence Row

The first day I walked into Providence Row for my internship, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I quickly learned that Providence Row was a place where I could find my footing very quickly and meet some extraordinary people.

Working in the Finance and Resources department, I did not expect to have much contact with the service users at Providence Row. In reality, I gained exposure to almost every function of the charity, learning and witnessing where all the money goes and how it affects the activities that the clients take part in. Working in the garden, preparing food in the kitchen, and participating in English and art classes was a truly rewarding opportunity.

Having hands-on exposure to the service users of Providence Row was incredible. Hearing their stories and gaining an understanding of their backgrounds and experiences was both inspiring and heart-warming.

One thing I really enjoyed about meeting some of the clients of Providence Row was how deeply caring they are. Even though many of them are in difficult personal circumstances, they truly look out for one another. They
offer help to someone that needs it more than they do. I have been struck by how upbeat and positive they are despite the fact that they are going through a rough patch in their lives. They usually find the best in any given situation and appreciate all they have to live for.

I really encourage people to volunteer and help at Providence Row. A little bit of help from a volunteer can make a big difference in the lives of people who need support. It has had an impact on my life, and I will remember all the great things that happen on a daily basis at Providence Row.

I would also like to thank the employees at Providence Row for welcoming me with open arms for my eight-week internship. The staff are so passionate about their work and the incredible services the charity provides. I will not soon forget the amazing experiences I had at Providence Row and in London.
